DROGBA AND MCEACHRAN PLAY HISTORIC OLYMPIC ROLE
Didier Drogba and Josh McEachran cemented their place in the history books today as they become Olympic torchbearers in the lead-up to London 2012.
As the Torch Relay entered its fifth day, covering the route from Bristol to Cheltenham, the Chelsea duo were chosen to play a prominent role in proceedings.
Drogba, who confirmed yesterday that he will be leaving Stamford Bridge when his contract expires next month, carried the flame through the streets of Swindon, and was nominated for the role due to his continuous efforts in improving health and education for African children through the Didier Drogba Foundation, as well as supporting the club’s community and sporting activities for underprivileged youngsters in London.
‘It’s a great honour to be recognised for the work I do off the pitch, in local London communities or campaigning to improve the lives of children in Africa, and I’m delighted to be taking part,’ said the man who secured the Champions League trophy with his last kick for the club.
McEachran, meanwhile, was awarded the honour of carrying the flame from Calne to Marlborough on what will inevitably have been an unforgettable day for the 19-year-old midfielder who recently returned to the club following a loan spell at Swansea.
The youngster was nominated due to his involvement with Chelsea’s Matchday Wishes programme, where seriously or terminally ill children were invited into the tunnel after games to meet the players, as well as being involved in over 350 training ground visits. He was also the club’s reading ambassador for the National Literacy Trust, which encourages young people to take up reading, as well as promoting the benefits of education. He also devoted his own time to helping out with coaching events and launched Chelsea’s anti-crime and gang campaign in Hong Kong.
I won’t play for another English club. I am too attached to Chelsea. My blood is blue and it won’t change.
